“S. D’Arrigo” school was born in 2000 and includes 5 complexes located in 3 neighboring municipalities. The complexes are all equipped with computer, science, art and music laboratories. There are 90 teachers and 25 people in the administrative and assistance staff. The programs of the first cycle of education are based on the National Guidelines of 2012: they aim to develop the personality of the pupil through a path that accompanies him from 3 to 14 years old.
What are the organisation’s activities in the field of this application?
Our school has a particular interest in music and theatre. We carry out PON projects, organize shows in the area and participate in artistic competitions. Our Music, Italian and English teachers have experience in writing plays (also adapting literary texts), acting, singing and playing music and they are familiar with teamwork. We have a school hymn and our pupils can realize choral performances accompanied by musical instruments. In particular, we want to introduce some typical instruments of Sicily, such as the marranzano and the reed flute, and the typical Sicilian songs, such as the hymn of mother earth. After conveying a survey in our school, in accordance with the results of the revealed needs, we decided to share our experience and learn from the comparison and cooperation with our European partners.
What profiles and age groups of learners are concerned by the organisation’s work?
The institute includes kindergarten, primary and lower secondary school and has 35 classes and 600 pupils aged 3 to 14. The project will involve children in the fourth and fifth grades of primary school and all the students of lower secondary school, with special attention to the inclusion of disadvantaged pupils or pupils with less opportunities. Our goal is to involve the whole school community. Through the participation in cross-border partnerships and international cooperation, the school aims to improve pupils’ citizenship skills, introducing different cultures and promoting activities that encourage creativity, development of ideas and comparison. In particular, through this project we want to: – make pupils aware of being part of Europe; – improve the communication skills of pupils in a foreign language; – know and compare cultures, traditions and school systems of the European countries
